Scratched glass - whether on windows, mirrors or car windscreens - is not only visually unsightly, but can also be a daily annoyance. Scratches scatter light and a surface that was once perfectly smooth and shiny becomes dull and scratched. Fortunately, there is a simple and proven way to restore glass to its former glory. The key to success is cerium oxide - one of the most effective solutions for polishing glass.
Cerium oxide is a product that has been used in the polishing industry for many years. It is an effective glass polish that removes small scratches. Thanks to its unique properties, you can easily remove imperfections from the surface of your glass without having to replace it. In the following article we will show you step by step how to use cerium oxide for glass polishing to achieve perfect results and make your glass look like new again. Find out how you can save time and money by using a simple but effective polishing process.
What you need:
- Container for mixing the paste
- Cerium oxide
- Warm water (30-50°C)
- Felt polishing pad
- Drill or screwdriver
- Spray bottle with water
- Clean cloth
Step 1: Prepare the surface
Before you start polishing the glass, clean the surface thoroughly. Remove any dust, dirt or greasy stains that may interfere with the polishing process.
Step 2: Prepare the mixture
Mix the cerium oxide with warm water in a ratio of 2 parts cerium oxide to 1 part water. Stir until you get a smooth paste.
Step 3: Apply the paste
Apply the mixture and polish with a felt pad or cloth (hand polishing is less recommended as it is more labour intensive). If polishing by machine, set the speed of the drill to 500-600 rpm.
Step 4: Polishing
Start polishing the glass surface in circular motions. Ensure that the paste is evenly distributed to achieve a smooth finish. After a while, increase the speed to 1500-2000 rpm to effectively smooth the glass.
Step 5: Maintain moisture
Spray the surface with water from time to time to prevent the paste from drying out. The moisture content of the paste is essential for the cerium oxide to work properly.
Step 6: Finish
When you have finished polishing, wipe the glass surface with a clean cloth to remove any paste residue. Make sure the surface is shiny and streak-free.
Useful tips:
- For repairs (removal of scratches, nicks, etc.) to the surface, use a more aggressive paste by mixing cerium oxide with a small amount of water (2:1). For general cleaning, polishing or surface maintenance, mix the powder with more water (1:1).
- Polishing by hand can give good results but is time consuming. If using a drill, be careful not to exceed 2200 rpm.
- Remember not to stay in one place for too long to avoid the lens effect.
Regular polishing with cerium oxide allows you to restore the glass to its original shine and remove minor scratches. For best results, be patient and precise and your lens surface will look like new.
